Eating a loan

Inspired by the work of Henry Hargreaves’ “No More Seconds" and Martin Parr’s “Real Food" this project uses a clinical approach to explore the diets and cooking capabilities of students whilst at University. It was recently reported that 73% of students self-cook meals from raw ingredients most days however only 18% eat the recommended five or more portions of fruit and veg a day. Using lighting techniques inspired by Parr, Hewitt steps away from the delicate lighting and artistry of her usual food photography to document the raw reality of the student diet. Displayed through typology, the photographer looks to investigate and perhaps challenge the stereotypes of ‘student food' and to see how factors such as culture and politics contribute to a student's meal choice.
